Term Paper- European History The Religious Wars (The attempts by Catholic monarchs to re-establish European religious unity and by both Catholic and Protestant monarchs to establish strong centralized states led to many wars among the European states.Religious Wars Between the middle of the Fifteenth century and Eighteenth century, there was a wide range of views of the poor and disenfranchised in Western Europe, including the treatment and health of the poor, religious attitudes, social sympathy, and punish.Two major religious wars in the 16th and 17th centuries were the French Wars of Religion and the Thirty Years' War with the Catholics fighting against the Protestants. They were both thought on the grounds of politics and religion and they changed the course of European history.
The European wars of religion were a series of Christian religious wars which were waged in Europe during the 16th, 17th and early 18th centuries. The wars were largely ended by the Peace of Westphalia (1648), establishing a new political order now known as Westphalian sovereignty.An academic study on the subject of the role of religion in 73 major conflicts over the past 3,500 years concluded that 60% of wars had no religious provocations whatsoever and only 4% were viewed as truly religious wars (Edwards). The Crusades, which are often mistaken for pure religious wars, had other factors that contributed to its cause too.
Europe was plagued by wars of religion. Even though religion was given as the reaso for war, there were many other reason as well. Including: land, money and economics, political power, natural resources, and more included the Hussite rebellion, and missionaries and conquistadors versus Native Americans.
